Primary Purpose:

Coordinate assignments and schedules of bus drivers, routes, and vehicles to ensure safe, efficient, and economical transportation services.  Oversee maintenance of district fleet.  Oversee record keeping as required by Federal, State, and local law, as well as per district procedures.  Oversee delivery of mail and packages to campuses and to and from the post office. 

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

High school diploma or GED

Valid Texas commercial driver’s license with P and S endorsements, or ability to get one within 90 days of job offer

TEA School Bus Driver Certification or ability to get one within 90 days of job offer

Current certification as a state inspector, or the ability to obtain such within 90 days of job offer

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Effective telephone and communication skills

Ability to receive and give verbal instructions effectively

Ability to pass alcohol and drug test

Proficient map reading skills

Some mechanical ability

 

Experience Preferred:

Two years’ experience as certified school bus driver

Two or more years clerical experience

Two or more years light mechanical experience

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

ROUTES AND SCHEDULES

  1. Assist or handle assignments of bus drivers, bus routes, vehicles, and substitutes for morning and afternoon shifts.
  2. Coordinate extracurricular transportation.
  3. Prepare data required to plan bus route and post route schedule, as well as assist in the collection of date required by federal and state law, or by district procedures.
  4. Assist with preparing and updating district maps showing areas served by each bus. Distribute maps to schools and within the district as needed.
  5. Assist with writing, scheduling and keeping routes up-to-date in computer.
  6. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.

SHIPPING AND RECEIVING/MAIL OPERATIONS

  1. Oversee personnel responsible for delivery of mail within the district, fill in when such personnel are absent.

COMMUNICATION

  1. Maintain good public relations with students and school personnel.
  2. Communicate with drivers about problems or concerns they have with parents, students, teachers, and coworkers when Transportation Director is unavailable.
  3. Interact with special program administrators and school officials concerning transportation of special education students when Transportation Director is unavailable.
  4. Help campuses to place new students on buses and advise drivers of new or dismissed students, in conjunction with Transportation Director.
  5. Model behavior that is professional, ethical and responsible.

VEHICLE OPERATION

  1. Serve as substitute bus driver.
  2. Be willing to drive any bus as needed.

Maintenance and Repair of Vehicle

  1. Perform fluid checks on buses.
  2. Schedule and perform preventative maintenance on all district vehicles to include annual inspections.
  3. Evaluate the need for and perform mechanical repairs, and supervise repairs that need to be outsources.
  4. Assist in upkeep of vehicle maintenance records.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. As needed in the absence of the Transportation Director.

Clear speech; ability to drive school bus; repetitive hand motions; early shift work; moderate walking, standing, and/or climbing; heavy lifting and carrying, stooping, bending, kneeling, and reaching. Work outside and inside; work around machinery with moving parts; work around moving objects or vehicles; exposure to dampness and humidity; work on ladders and scaffolding; exposure to slippery and uneven surfaces. Some split shifts may be required.
